We currently have a full time opening for an experienced Inpatient Physician Assistant to work in our surgical department. This position offers you the opportunity to care for patients in general surgery and sub-specialty units in the hospital while being able to perform bedside procedures.   In this inpatient setting, you will have a rotating night shift schedule including three 12 – hour shifts, every third weekend and some holidays.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.
  • Develops treatment plan and discusses proposed course of treatment with patient's attending physician and other health care team members as appropriate including consultants and referrals.
  • Enters progress note in patient's medical record to document patient status, treatment and procedures performed. Dictates discharge summaries as necessary.
  • Functions under surgeon's direction as surgical assistant. Assists in necessary preparations prior to and after surgery.
  • Initiates standing and regular orders including activity, diet, vital signs, routine laboratory work, routine diagnostic tests, laxatives, sedatives, analgesics, and appropriate medical and rehab therapies.
  • Monitors patients and communicates significant patient findings or changes in patients' status to the appropriate physician.
  • Obtains detailed and accurate history, performs physical examinations, and reviews medical records to assess patients' health status.
  • Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams.
  • Performs emergency lifesaving procedures as appropriate.
  • Performs necessary rounds independently or with the attending physician.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Performs procedures as appropriate for patient care. Writes appropriate order sets including medications.
  • Provides emotional and educational support to patient and family as may be appropriate.
  • Responds to nursing and ancillary status calls.
  • Stays aware of diagnostic tests reports that require prompt medical intervention. Communicates directly with physician for interventions.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education/Training:   Graduation from a Physician Assistant Program accredited by ARC-PA (Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant). Bachelors degree; Masters degree preferred.
  • Experience: No experience required. Prior physician assistant experience highly preferred.
  • License/Certification/Registration: NCCPA (National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants) certification. Current license with the Maryland Board of Physicians. Current BLS (Basic Life Support)/ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications
  • Knowledge, Skills & Abilities: Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.
