 Physician Assistant - Cardiovascular Services/Open Heart Surgery

MedStar Union Memorial Hospital is currently seeking a full time Physician Assistant to join the in-patient Cardiovascular Services Team. Schedule includes a four 10-hour shifts per week with rotating weekends and holidays.


Job Summary - Performs a variety of duties such as history and physicals as well as providing care to assigned patients. Assesses, diagnoses, documents findings, and writes medical orders. Makes clinical decisions relative to patient management through collaboration with physicians.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

· Analyzes the assessment data in determining diagnoses by defining and prioritizing actual or potential care problems as the basis for designing interventions for the restoration of health. Responds appropriately to patient care emergencies.

· Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations.

· Develops treatment plan and discusses proposed course of treatment with patient's attending physician and other health care team members as appropriate including consultants and referrals.

· Documents H & Ps (history and physicals), treatment plans, pre & post op orders, progress notes and discharge planning on all actual or potential patients undergoing cardiac surgery and/or interventional procedures.

· Evaluates all patient's progress toward attainment of expected outcomes. Through continuous evaluation of the patient's changing condition and response to therapeutic interventions, modifies the plan of care to optimize patient outcomes. Provides follow up progress notes on all cardiac patients undergoing cardiac surgery and/or interventional procedures.

· Identifies expected patient outcomes that are individualized to the patient. Under the direction of the physician, assures that the patient and other health care team members identify expected outcomes of care as the basis for developing multidisciplinary plan of care.

· Initiates, performs, and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests necessary in routine and emergent care of patients.

· Maintains current certification in ACLS, CPR and PA certification. Completes competency evaluations in appropriate areas. Demonstrates knowledge and skill to provide care appropriate to the age of patients served and completes mandatory in-services.

· Monitors patients and communicates significant patient findings or changes in patients' status, to the appropriate physician and other members of the health care team.

· Obtains detailed and accurate history, performs physical examinations, and reviews medical records to assess patients' health status. Develops patient problem list in order to ensure that patient receives comprehensive care. Uses approved forms for documentation of patient information ([link removed]). Initiates appropriate referral/consultations keeping in mind patient safety and cost containment issues.

· Participates in multidisciplinary quality and service improvement teams and participates in meetings and on committees and represents the department and hospital in community outreach efforts.

· Performs other duties as assigned.

· Responds appropriately to all nursing and ancillary status calls. Provides emotional and educational support to the patient and family as may be appropriate.

Minimum Qualifications

· Education/Training - Graduation from a Physician Assistant Program accredited by ARC-PA (Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant). Bachelors degree; Masters degree preferred.

· Experience - No experience required. Previous experience in cardiovascular highly desired.

· License/Certification/Registration - NCCPA (National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants) certification. Current license with the Maryland Board of Physicians. Current BLS (Basic Life Support)/ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) certifications.

· Knowledge, Skills & Abilities - Verbal and written communication skills. Basic computer skills preferred.
